About Us

The HOP opened its doors in July of 2018, starting with an impressive 12,000 square feet facility that included a lobby, pro-shop and six professional outdoor courts. In 2023, the facility underwent a major expansion, adding 18,000 more square feet that included six more courts, conference room, concession stand and players lounge. In October of 2025, the HOP purchased the 1.55 acres parcel adjoining our land for future expansion. Today, hundreds of people call the HOP their home with thousands of people coming to play pickleball at our house every month.

HOP Backstory –

Richard Holloman, Jan Abbott and a team of investors help build the HOP, the first dedicated indoor pickleball facility in the United States. After moving to Leland, North Carolina, Richard Holloman, formerly an executive in the software industry, became passionate about pickleball, only to find outdoor play often disrupted by the weather; he knew there had to be a better way.

Together, Richard and Jan led the growth of the pickleball scene in Brunswick County, teaching classes and organizing tournaments within Brunswick Forest. By the time the HOP opened its doors, a dedicated community of pickleball enthusiasts were eager to join. Sadly, Jan passed away January of 2024 – A Tribute Garden was created at the HOP to honor Jan and his legacy.

In December of 2024, Todd ‘Mojo’ and Vicki Muffley purchased Jan’s ownership interest. The couple are avid pickleballers as well as long time entrepreneurs with a steep background in marketing and business operations. The new team of Richard and Mojo look to expand the HOP’s brand and continue to bring innovative and fun activities to their members.
